One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books and television. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters, including MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in the hit movie “Supersize Me,” and Abraham Obama, the fusion of America’s 16th and 44th Presidents, an image widely discussed in the media as directly impacting the 2008 election. Other characters carousing through English’s art, in paintings, billboards, and sculpture include three-eyed rabbits, udderly delicious cowgirls and grinning skulls, blending stunning visuals with the bitingly humorous undertones of America’s Premier Pop Iconoclast.

Going once, going twice, gone! After a tour around the world, the Vader project ends here in Los Angeles, each artist designed helmet will be auctioned to close the tour. Be sure to visit the gallery because this may be the last chance you get to see them in person.

The Los Angeles Preview Exhibition will be open June 12-20 daily from Noon to 6pm.

This summer, The Vader Project launches the final chapter of its four-year art odyssey. The iconic collection features 100 Darth Vader Helmets re-imagined by today’s most notable artists. Completing its epic world tour, The Vader Project returns to Los Angeles in June for a special ten-day exhibition in Hollywood as a preview to the upcoming Freeman’s Auction in Philadelphia.

The Los Angeles Preview Exhibition is free to the public with an opening reception on June 11 from 6-10pm. The show will also feature a 200-plus page, full-color, limited edition catalog that is being produced for the auction and is available for pre-order now at www.thevaderproject.com. On June 12, the space will present a catalog signing event with over 20 participating artists in attendance beginning at 2pm on June 12. The Los Angeles Preview Exhibition will be open June 12-20 daily from Noon to 6pm.

Spring Before You Know it

This past season Heist and Co went through some HUGE changes, both good and bad. We hit one of those speed bumps that left us in a sink or swim situation. We are a member short but fortunately the team focused all our energy and took some ridiculously crazy risks and have become stronger than ever. Thanks to all our fans and retailers, the Spring 2010 line sold out with in the first month.

Our team has worked harder than ever, working day and night, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re proud of what we’ve done and can’t wait to share it with you.

Finally done and Spring 2010 is on its way out. Although I am happy with all the progress, growth, and success we this spring it’s hard to remember to stop and smell the roses, as cheesy as it sounds, you’re only young once and money could never buy that back.

Havoc Sacramento

Every second Saturday, Havoc brings the… whats a good word.. havoc, to Sacramento, California. Each month they draw in eager onlookers spilling into the street and every month, I’m told, the police have to shut it down.

Havoc is always on top of bringing something new to their customers with their store front. This month Havoc collaborated a pop-up shop with the Southern California Bike shop EPIC, and also brought live performances from local artist and Sacramento’s number one, DJ Rated R that did a tribute to RUN DMC.

Jeff Gillette’s “Dismayland”. Inspired by a vacation to India, Jeff depicts the litter-strewn mud banks of the horribly polluted shoreline of Mumbai India in a whole new light. ”In a continuing series of what I call “slumscape” paintings, reflective of experiences I’ve had touring slums in India I have a particular recollection of an early morning stroll near the bay in Mumbai. After rounding a corner of a row of shanties, I saw about a dozen slum-dwellers crouched, pissing on the shoreline. This vision had a strange effect on me, but instead of depicting it realistically, I’ve altered the “squatters” to be hovering over priceless iconic paintings that have become part of the debris of the rooftops.

Gillette’s other series of works has to do with creating foreground shanties from collaged elements of exclusively Disney children’s books. ” I try to capture the specific direction of light and shadow and linear perspective of the original bits of imagery then “build” the shacks onto painted backgrounds and foregrounds. Afterwards, I add highlights and shadows to integrate the collage into the structures. The juxtaposition from the “Happiest Place on Earth” to one of the ugliest, most wretchedly filthy places, is my intention.”

This reminds me of the stereotypical tan obsessed Orange County girls. My favorite piece.

Downtown Art Walk

Free art! Everything from fine art, graffiti, contemporary, music, and even hair styles. A live forum for artist and those who simply appreciate it. The Downtown Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour of the many art exhibition venues in Downtown Los Angeles – commercial art galleries, museums, and non-profit arts venues. It takes place on the 2nd Thursday of every month. Public information and a printable pdf map of the Downtown Art Walk isavailable here.

Participants in the Downtown Art Walk are the more than 40 galleries and museums located throughout the central downtown area, within the walkable districts between the Grand Avenue / Disney Hall / MOCA, Little Tokyo, the Financial District, and centered around Gallery Row on Main and Spring Streets in the Historic Core. Most venues are open at least 12-9PM, but some may open later than 12PM or close earlier than 9PM; specific exceptions are listed next to each venue on the map.

Banksy Film!

Exit Through the Gift Shop: A Banksy Film is a humorous and ironic documentary film about street artists, in particular Banksy. The film began as the obsession of Thierry Guetta, a French immigrant in Los Angeles, who became fascinated by street art and spent years filming the art and its creators. The twist in the tale comes when Banksy turns into the film-maker, while Guetta decides to become an artist, under the name Mr. Brainwash. It premièred at the Sundance Film Festival on 24 January 2010. The film includes footage of notable graffiti or street artists at work, including Shepard Fairey, Guetta’s cousin Invader, and Banksy himself, though the latter’s face is never shown, and his voice is distorted to preserve his anonymity.
